This project began as the design of a modest wine cellar in the crawl space/basement of the Owner’s existing residence; however the discovery of inadequate foundations and site drainage issues caused the Owners to reconsider. The result was a re-design of the residence that included the demolition of 99% of the existing house and the addition of new space, nearly doubling the size of the existing residence. Holey Associates worked with the Los Altos Planning Department to cleverly create wonderful light-filled spaces, technically defined as basement space that leveraged the Zoning Code to exceed the allowable FAR by 70%. The resulting project was a 13,000 square foot residence with a comfortable sense of scale that offered a European hill town experience to those fortunate to spend time there.
